These are some of my works from my school’s broadcast program, KDGN. Having been a part of my school’s media program for all of high school, I am well versed in programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Davinci Resolve.
I was the Creative Director of our program, which meant that I oversaw the creation of the intro and outro, credits, and design of each episode. Additionally, as Creative Director, I was tasked with using my experience with special effects, graphics, and transitions to enhance the quality and uniqueness of our segments. As a leader, I learned the different filming, interviewing, and editing techniques of each of our team members, and introduced them to video styling tools that suited their style. Finally, at the end of the year I was tasked with creating video editing tutorials for the future new KDGN members, which covered everything from basic speed changing to advanced special effects.
Outside of creating journalistic and informative content, I love creating humorous videos and experimenting with different editing styles, multimedia, and special effects. I hope to further this passion in college and am always eager to learn more!
This is the sequence that plays at the end of every KDGN episode. When designing the outro, I wanted to create a seamless transition from our anchors to the credits, and thus came the idea to have the anchor footage shrink to the corner while the credits start rolling.
Additionally, I was responsible for crediting everyone who appeared in or worked on each episode, from the students we interviewed to the photographers behind our Sports Desk segment.
This is the segment I created for the spring VEX Robotics tournament that we hosted in our own school. Being a part of our robotics program certainly helped me in creating this segment, as it made the process of getting interviews from fellow classmates to understanding how robotics tournaments operated behind the scenes much easier to convey in an informative and entertaining way.
Every spring, my town will host the Spring Festival, otherwise known as the Chinese New Year festival. Being half-Chinese myself, I attend the Spring Festival every year and have a personal connection to the culture and community. Thus, when presented the chance to showcase them on KDGN, I jumped at the opportunity.
Additionally, I am a part of my school’s Chinese club and Chinese class. On the day of the Spring Festival, all club and class members were invited to volunteer at our activities booth. Fun fact: I spent the whole day running back and forth between booths with my camera in one hand and flyers to join Chinese club in the other! While I left to film the events, my friends would cover for me in the booth!
This is the segment I made for a class feature. Having been in AP Capstone Seminar and Research myself, I learned from our teacher that the class description was confusing to underclassmen assembling their schedules, as they didn’t understand what the class would entail. Thus, I decided to make a deep dive and promotional video for both KDGN and AP Capstone to encourage underclassmen to enroll. In fact, our class of just 8 students was soon replaced the next year by a class of 20!
This is the sequence that plays at the beginning of every KDGN episode. I took inspiration from neon glow aesthetics and created the halo effect using our classroom light ring. I wanted to experiment with different lighting tricks, so I made two versions of the intro sequence. In fact, the first intro sequence that I drafted was a minute long!
This intro won an honorable mention in the Intro Sequence category for the UIL ILPC (Interscholastic League Press Conference) 2022-2023 Broadcast Individual Achievement Awards.
This is the teaser I created for the Robotics Deep Dive segment that I created. In addition to broadcasting episodes every other Friday, KDGN posted teasers of the different events at our school on Wednesdays on our Instagram account. These teasers were posted under our social media branch called KDGN Glance. Fun fact: The title “Glance” was spontaneously agreed upon in the last 5 minutes of our first day of class!
In regards to designing the Robotics Deep Dive teaser, I realized that there was a stigma surrounding our robotics program; many students believed it was nerdy, uncool, and boring. As such, I wanted to make the teaser for the segment as cool and exciting as possible to break this stigma and give the program its justice!
At the beginning of the school year, the KDGN team came together and decided to revamp the whole program. One of the changes we decided to make was categorizing segments and varying the types of segments per episode. For example, an episode could have an informative segment, a club feature, a novelty or comedy, and a Sports Desk update.
Bollywood Dance Club was the student organization that I decided to focus on for a club feature segment. Being half-Indian myself, I wanted to give the Bollywood Dance Club their much deserved time in the spotlight!
Having already compiled and edited several audio tracks for them to choreograph their dances to, I was good friends with their members, which made getting interviews with their leadership team much easier, and it gave me a much deeper insight into their club dynamic.
This is the design for the KDGN Glance intro that appears at the beginning of every KDGN Instagram teaser. I took inspiration from the neon glow aesthetic that I implemented in the official KDGN intro sequence as well.
This is the Sports Desk transition graphic that appears when transitioning from our news anchors to our Sports Desk segment. This graphic won 3rd place in the Graphics category for the UIL ILPC (Interscholastic League Press Conference) 2022-2023 Broadcast Individual Achievement Awards.
